Claude Bersano

1949 - 2018

He was born on November 13, 1949, in Nice, France, at a time when the city was still recovering from Italian occupation during WW II.

His parents having divorced at the time of his birth, he was raised by a cousin, Louis Nucera, who would go on to become a well-regarded journalist and novelist. With family on both sides of the border, Claude grew up speaking both French and Italian. Louis's career having taken them to Paris in the 60s, Claude's final year of lycée was marked by the events of 1968, and he was fond of recounting his experiences of that turbulent time.

His love of classical organ music brought him in contact with many of the great French organists of the day, and he briefly studied organ performance and organ building before training in acoustics and broadcasting. He was chief sound engineer at CBC/Radio Canada's Paris studio for ten years. It was there that he met his future wife, as she worked for CBC one summer while in graduate school. Following their marriage in May 1981, they moved back to the U.S., living first in Lexington KY and then for over two decades in Richmond VA. Claude retrained as a computer hardware technician and enjoyed problem-solving and user support.

After moving to Amherst in 2006, he applied for citizenship and proudly voted for the first time in 2008. He had a keen technical mind, a genuine interest in the stories of the people he encountered in daily life, a newsman's attentiveness to politics and current events, a passion for steam locomotives, and a deep love for his family and his many friends throughout the world.

Claude Bersano passed away suddenly on October 7, 2018.

Ses parents ayant divorcé au moment de sa naissance, il a été élevé par un cousin, Louis Nucera, qui allait devenir un journaliste et un romancier très apprécié. Avec une famille des deux côtés de la frontière, Claude a grandi en parlant à la fois français et italien. La carrière de Louis les ayant menés à Paris dans les années 60, Claude a vécu les événements de 1968 en dernière année de lycée et il aimait raconter ses expériences de cette époque turbulente.

Son amour de la musique d'orgue classique l'a mis en contact avec de nombreux grands organistes français de l'époque, et il a brièvement étudié l'interprétation et la facture d'orgue avant de suivre une formation en acoustique et en radiodiffusion. Il a été ingénieur du son en chef au studio parisien de la CBC/Radio Canada pendant dix ans. C'est là qu'il a rencontré sa future épouse, qui a travaillé pour la CBC un été alors qu'elle était en troisième cycle. Après leur mariage en mai 1981, ils sont rentrés aux États-Unis, d'abord à Lexington KY, puis pendant plus de deux décennies à Richmond VA. Claude a suivi une formation de technicien en matériel informatique et a apprécié la résolution de problèmes et l'assistance aux utilisateurs.

Après s'être installé à Amherst en 2006, il a demandé la citoyenneté américaine et a fièrement voté pour la première fois en 2008. Il avait un esprit technique vif, un véritable intérêt pour les histoires des gens qu'il rencontrait dans la vie quotidienne, une attention particulière pour la politique et l'actualité, une passion pour les locomotives à vapeur et un amour profond pour sa famille et ses nombreux amis dans le monde entier.

Claude Bersano est décédé subitement le 7 octobre 2018.
